A team of engineers from the University of California, Berkeley have developed a process to create silicon microneedles which may be used for continuous blood monitoring devices. Based on a lithographic process commonly used in computer processor manufacturing, this design utilizes many tiny microneedles that sit on top of the skin, and would penetrate deeply enough to reach the fluid between cells (which can be tested for blood sugar levels), but not deeply enough to hit nerves or blood vessels.
